About Mandy
I am a Certified Holistic Doula with La Matrona and I am a DONA trained birth and postpartum doula. I am also a Certified Breastfeeding Counselor and La Leche League leader. In addition to my doula services, I'm a Licensed Massage Therapist (SC License #5363) specializing in fertility, pre-natal, labor, & postpartum massage. I also have the honor of being a member of the South Carolina Breastfeeding Action Committee which was responsible for the passage of the first law in South Carolina protecting a mother's right to nurse in public.
My passion for helping women have the birth they desire stems from my own experiences in childbirth. I have 3 daughters all with different birth stories. My first daughter Zoe, 14, was an induced and medicated birth at 42 weeks. I knew immediately following her birth that I was responsible for educating myself and changing my next birth experience. During this time of research, I found out about doulas and knew then that this was going to be my life's work. When I had my next daughter, Stella, 9, I hired a doula and devoured all things birth and beyond. I had a successful intervention free birth in a hospital setting. What a tremendous difference it was having someone there whose sole purpose was to support myself and my husband. I was able have the natural birth I had wanted so deeply and allow my daughter entrance to this world drug-free and alert. Having had such an experience deepened my desire to assist other childbearing women. Finally when I became pregnant with my third daughter, Aydan, 8, I chose a homebirth. Aydan's birth was the most cleansing, profound, and peaceful experience I've had. I learned so much about myself and women from my amazing midwife. My knowledge and passion during this experience grew exponentially.
Thus became my mission: to help women to know their options and know that I am there to support their decisions. Childbirth is such a deep psychological experience and needs to be held in such a regard as that it profoundly affects a women's feelings of herself and competency as a parent. I also feel strongly about the "fourth trimester" being a critical time for the new family to bond and establish themselves as a family.
The interval from pregnancy through postpartum is a unique time in which women grow in all aspects of their lives. The need for women to have female relationships during this period of transition is critical. Regardless of the make-up of your family or the choices you make, I can help nurture and support you with un-biased care. A woman possesses the knowledge and strength within her to carry and birth a child with awareness and beauty. Just as a woman grows a child, so too does she grow more of a connection to the earth, to the bringing forward of life and desire to protect and nurture that life. I recognize that birth is a very sacred experience and hold the utmost respect for you, your family and your needs for privacy and confidentiality.
